If you want to be successful, you need to do three things:

  1. You need to work hard
  2. You need to work smart
  3. You need to work consistently.

If you work hard and you work smart, but you don't do it very often, you aren't going to make it. If you work hard and do it all the time, but you don't work smart, you aren't going to make it. And it goes without saying that if you don't work hard, then you don't stand a chance.

But what does it mean to work hard?

I guarantee your parents have told you that you need to work hard. The general rule is hard work. Any time they interview some celebrity, asking how they made it, they say, "You gotta work hard. You gotta work hard."

Here's what it means to work hard:

To work hard is to push yourself past the point of pain and discomfort. Hard work means that you don't throw in the towel once the burden gets too heavy.

Hard work can be physical or mental. As the weights become heavy and your muscles become weak, you continue and persevere. After studying intensely for 30 minutes, and your mind wants a break, you decide to stay even more locked in for another hour. You work twice as hard because you want to succeed bad enough.

The aversion you feel towards pain and discomfort MUST be manipulated. Rather than averted, pain should be welcomed. The intensity of your studies, the rigor of your classes, and the exhaustion in your run should become comforting. You have to be comfortable being uncomfortable.

If you want to be great, you need to make working hard a habit.
